What is online blackjack?

The aim of blackjack is to beat the dealer by getting a hand closest to the score of 21. Go over, and you are bust and lose.

Playing online blackjack brings the fun online. Advanced computer software with beautiful animations and graphics, realistic sounds, and super smooth gameplay creates a fantastic playing experience.

Live blackjack makes the player experience even more realistic by streaming live action from a real casino or unique studio.

Now, the game itself. Blackjack is played using a regular deck or decks of 52 playing cards. Blackjack rules are simple.

Place a bet and get dealt two cards while the dealer is dealt one card face up. Face cards are worth 10, and aces are 1 or 11. All other cards are their face value.

The aim is to beat the dealer by getting as close to 21 as possible. Receive an ace and card worth 10, and that's called a 'natural' or blackjack, and you win. Blackjack is paid at odds of 3/2.

If you don't have a natural, you either 'hit' – take another card – or 'stand' – stay on your total.

You can keep hitting as much as you want, but you lose if you go over 21. The dealer wins in that case and doesn't reveal any more cards.

If you stick on a number under 21, for example, 16, the dealer must play. They give themselves a second card. Blackjack rules dictate the dealer must stand on 17 and hit on 16 or under.

If both hands are not bust, the winner is the hand closest to 21. If the player wins the hand, they are paid at odds of 1/1 (except blackjack). If the dealer wins, then the player loses their stake. Ties result in a push where the player's stake is returned.

How to win at online blackjack

Smart blackjack players can push the house edge down to around 0.5%, making it one of the best casino games to play.

The player should understand basic blackjack strategy (more below) and know all the extra rules.

Aside from the basic rules, there are three more things you should be aware of. Firstly, splitting pairs is when you are dealt two cards of the same value, and you split them into two new hands. You double your stake in this instance.

Doubling down is the option to double your bet when your first two cards dealt are worth 9,10 or 11. If you choose to double your stake, you will only receive one more card.

Lastly, there is insurance to consider. If the dealer's upcard is an ace, players can buy insurance against the dealer making blackjack. This is an additional bet which pays 2/1 should the dealer indeed get blackjack.

To help you push the house edge down, look out for single deck blackjack - a firm favourite of blackjack fans as it's easier to keep track of what cards are left in the deck. It's available at Amok.

In general, most online blackjack games use between six and eight decks of cards.

Best strategy for online blackjack

Your blackjack strategy should revolve around what the dealer's upcard is. This is valuable information, and here are the three scenarios to remember.

The dealer has a 'strong' card – a 7,8,9,10 or 11. Draw until you hit at least 17 (or go bust).

The dealer has a 'weak' card – a 4,5 or 6. Stand on 12 or over. Don't ever take a card in this scenario if there is a chance of going bust.

The dealer has an 'ok' card – a 2 or a 3. Aim to stand on 13 or higher.

Aim for at least a total of 18 if you are dealt an ace. An ace and a six, for example, is a fair hand at 17, but top strategy dictates you should hit again.

Now for doubling down. If you have a total of 11, double down. Double down with a total of 10 unless the dealer has a 10-card or an ace. Double down on a total of 9 if the dealer's card is a 2 through to 6.
